About

The Second Annual Mauro Panaggio
Basketball Tournament

Mauro Panaggio, who passed away in 2018, was a lifelong teacher. Whether it was in health and physical education, sports science, sports management, as an author and ultimately on the basketball court, Panaggio’s philosophy always placed a strong emphasis on educating his students and players. It was his belief that the coach cannot be separated from his role as a teacher if he is to be consistently successful.

Over 40 years of coaching took Mauro from high school to SUNY Brockport to the Continental Basketball Association. His accolades include:

    • Thirteen years at the High School level with 11 League Championships.
    • Nine years of coaching at SUNY Brockport where his teams won four SUNYAC Championships and two NCAA College Division III Eastern Regional Championships, advancing each time to the Final Four of the NCAA National Championships.
    • Head coach in the Continental Basketball Association, the official development league of the NBA at that time. Coach Panaggio was named CBA Coach of the Year three times, is the all-time winningest coach in CBA history and won two league championships.

Major Honors include:

1978 – Inducted into SUNY Brockport Athletic Hall of Fame as Player and Coach

2002 – Inducted into NY State Section V Hall of Fame as Player and Coach

2002 – Inducted into New York State Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame

High praise from one of the best coaches in the history of basketball:

“Mauro is a very good coach and has both college and professional championships to prove it. Winning aside, I found Mauro always willing to talk the game and exchange ideas. Give him your eye and ear.”
Phil Jackson
, Head Coach – NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers & Chicago Bulls as well as CBA’s Albany Patroons

Mauro was absolutely thrilled to see the this First Annual tournament named in his honor and featuring SUNY Brockport. A final note is that Mauro coached his sons, Mike and Dan Panaggio, at Brockport. Mike and Dan are founders and owners of the DME Sports Academy facilities which are hosting this tournament. A close-knit family continues to work together to help teach the students athletes of today, and the leaders of tomorrow.
